Microorganism ID Service

Altogen Labs is a GLP-compliant contract research laboratory (CRO) that provides custom microorganism identification and bioinformatics characterization services (all types of bacteria and microbial identification, pure cultures and mixed populations, research and clinical samples). Our service include both 16S rDNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, yeast, soil, algae, animal, and microbial samples) to support and accelerate: Patent application, Genotypic bacterial identification, Microbial identification testing, Novel microorganism discovery, Bacteria detection, R&D research studies, and Clinical applications.

Service Description:

The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing has proven a powerful tool for classifying microorganism and has been used for bacterial identification. Molecular tools based on the 16S rRNA gene have been developed and used for bacterial identification of different species within the same genus. Altogen Labs provides both sequencing and bioinformatic services for bacterial identification and discovery of novel bacteria using 16S rDNA gene sequencing. In particular, this service allows identification of bacteria from environmental samples and healthy or clinical specimens that cannot be identified by conventional phenotypic methods or are refractory to biochemical identification.

We accept a variety of samples for bacterial identification, including bacteria-contaminated environmental samples, cultured or uncultured bacterial samples (2×10e8 or more bacteria), or genomic DNA (100 ng or more) for molecular microorganism and bacterial identification. A sequence-based approach using the 16S ribosomal DNA regions as targets for molecular identification of isolates is performed. The filtered reads are analyzed using the software package, which provides a taxonomical hierarchy classification (from domain to genus) of bacteria based on the similarity to the complete or partial 16S rRNA gene along with bootstrap confidence estimates.

Altogen Labs provide sample processing, computational analysis, data interpretation, and laboratory reporting services. Deliverables include the following: gDNA extraction from microbial cultures, amplification of the 16S gene by PCR, sequence analysis using the ABI platform, systematic double analysis, comparison of the unknown sequences with the sequences in major public databases, preparing the final report containing bacterial identity information, preparing similarity matrix tables indicating the homology within the most similar neighbors, and constructing phylogenetic trees indicating evolutionary relationships.

Typical samples include: bacterial genomic DNA, microorganisms recovered from environmental samples, healthy or clinical bacteria specimens, marine ecosystems bacterial samples, swabs and cultured isolates.
